London: Australia made 566 for eight declared against England after Steven Smith cashed in on his superb form to hit a double century on the second day of the second Ashes Test at Lord's on Friday.
Australia captain Michael Clarke, who saw his side dominate after he won the toss on a good batting pitch, closed the tourists' first innings shortly after tea when Mitchell Johnson was out for 15.
Steven Smith (215) and Chris Rogers (173) both produced their Test-best scores during a commanding first innings that saw them put on 284 for the second wicket.
Fast-medium bowler Stuart Broad led England's attack with four for 83 in 27 overs after the hosts took just one wicket on Thursday's opening day.
England now need 367 to avoid the follow-on.
They lead the five-match series 1-0 after their 169-run win in the first Test in Cardiff last week.
