The King Fahad Causeway binding Saudi Arabia and its neighbour Bahrain is set to undergo an expansion which would almost double its capacity.
Under new engineering designs, the number of arrival lanes would be increased from 17 to 33 to be able to accommodate the ever-growing traffic and influx of passengers on the causeway.
Eastern province passports public relations and media director and official spokesman Colonel Ma’alla AlOtaibi said that the new fish-skeleton-shaped expansion would help fast-track travel procedures for passengers.
Meanwhile, the causeway witnessed a massive rush of passengers due to the school spring holidays in Saudi Arabia causing long queues of travellers to wait on the roads for more than six hours.
Colonel Al-Otaibi said that the number of travellers who left Saudi Arabia through the King Fahad Causeway exceeded 101,636 last Saturday.
