Indian actress Sridevi's death due to cardiac arrest has left her fans and the Indian film fraternity stunned.
According to a report in Khaleej Times, Sridevi passed away in her hotel room in the Emirates Towers, Dubai at 11pm on Saturday this according to a source in the Indian Consulate in Dubai.
She reportedly had a fainting spell in her bathroom and was immediately rushed to Rashid Hospital in Dubai.
Sources in the Indian Consulate stated that she was brought dead to the hospital. "Her mortal remains were handed over to the forensic department," the source added.
Consulate officials confirmed that her body is currently at the police headquarters morgue in Al Qusais and a consulate employee is currently with the family, helping them expedite procedures for repatriation
Reports also suggest that she was alone in Dubai as she wanted to spend some time alone in the UAE on a break and had asked her husband and daughter, Boney and Khushi to leave for Mumbai.
However, there is a conflicting report from an Indian Bollywood website which says that while Boney Kapoor did have to go to India after the wedding he was back in Dubai and with Sridevi when she had the heart attack.
Meanwhile, India's Consul General of India in Dubai Vipul told Gulf News: “We are in touch with Dubai Police and other authorities to expedite the repatriation of the body.”
Confirming the news of her death, Sridevi's brother-in-law and actor Sanjay Kapoor, who landed in Dubai on Sunday morning, told Khaleej Times that Sridevi suffered a heart attack at 11 pm last night. She was in the hotel room in Dubai when it happened, he said.
"We are completely shocked. She had no history of a heart attack," he said.
Though the wedding function of nephew Mohit Marwah for which Sridevi and family came over to the UAE was held in Ras Al Khaimah, sources say the actress was later reportedly staying at a hotel operated by the Jumeirah Group in Dubai.
Sridevi landed in Dubai a few days back to attend the wedding of Boney Kapoor’s nephew, Mohit Marwah in Ras Al Khaimah. The whole Kapoor family was in attendance, except Sridevi’s elder daughter Jhanvi, who was busy shooting for her debut, Dhadak.
It is reported that after the wedding, Sridevi asked Boney and Khushi to leave back to Mumbai, as she wanted a short holiday in Dubai before she returned. The actress spent a few days in the city before she breathed her last breath, yesterday in the hotel. Upon hearing the news, Boney, Jhanvi, and Khushi, along with other members of the Kapoor family, flew back to Dubai. However, the piece of news cannot be verified.
Sridevi and her family were in Ras Al Khaimah at the Waldorf Astoria where the wedding was held. It is not known when she came to Dubai from RAK.
A number of Bollywood celebrities including Karan Johar, Manish Malhotra, Athiya Shetty and others were part of the celebrations. While Rhea and Sonam stayed back at the Bulgari Hotel, most of the celebrities flew back. The actress was seen just a few days ago, taking part in the wedding festivities with gusto.
The news was met with shock by everyone from the industry and outside.
