BAHRAIN claimed a well-deserved 3-0 (25-22, 25-13, 25-23) victory over Qatar last night in the third Asian Men’s U23 Volleyball Championship, being played in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar.
The Bahrainis claimed their first and only victory of the preliminary round with the result. They had earlier lost to Chinese Taipei and Pakistan and had to settle for third place in Pool ‘C’.
They will now play in the lower classification groups for the tournament’s next stage, where they will hope to finish as high as ninth place overall. They have been placed in Pool ‘G’ for this phase alongside Hong Kong, hosts Myanmar and Qatar once again.
In the top eight, qualifying from the preliminary pools for Pool ‘E’ were Australia, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Taipei. For Pool ‘F’ were Japan, Kazakhstan, India and China.
Pool ‘H’ in the classification round includes Vietnam, Saudi Arabia, Thialand and New Zealand.
The Bahrainis relied on their solid attack yesterday in their win against their Qataris. They were superior on points won on spikes (35-29), as well as on serve (7-2). Qatar had the advantage on blocks (7-5), but they gave up 28 points on errors to Bahrain, with the nationals only allowing 20 from their end.
Hasan Abbas was the top individual scorer for Bahrain. He finished with 19 points overall, including 14 on attack, four on blocks and one on serve. Skipper Mahmood Salman added 13 points as the team’s only other player in double-figures.
Sayed Alabbar added seven, Jawher Fares and Mohammed Abdulla had three apiece, and Hasan Haider and Yusuf Saif each scored one point.
Papemaguette Diagne paced Qatar with 12 points in the loss.
Today is a rest day. Bahrain resume action against Hong Kong tomorrow at 7.30am. The following day they play hosts Myanmar.
