Kuwait City: Saudi Arabia will reopen its air space and land and sea borders to Qatar, Kuwait’s foreign minister has said in televised comments.
“Based on Kuwait’s Amir Shaikh Nawaf’s proposal, it was agreed to open the air space and land and sea borders between Saudi Arabia and Qatar, starting from this evening,” Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Ahmad Nasser Al Sabah said on state TV yesterday ahead of a GCC Summit in Saudi Arabia today.
He said a declaration would be signed at the summit, which was postponed from its usual December date as Riyadh pushed for an agreement towards ending the rift.
Saudi state agency SPA quoted Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman as saying the annual gathering of Gulf leaders would unite Gulf ranks “in the face of challenges facing the region”.
He said the GCC Summit will be “inclusive”, leading the states towards “reunification and solidarity in facing the challenges of our region”.
A senior UAE official said the summit will restore Gulf unity.
UAE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Anwar Gargash said in a Twitter post that “more work lies ahead and we are moving in the right direction”.
