BAHRAIN has taken a major step forward in achieving sustainable food security with the inauguration of a $12 million factory.
Deputy Prime Minister Shaikh Khalid bin Abdulla Al Khalifa inaugurated the Bahrain Agricultural Foods Storage and Security’s (Bafco) factory at the Bahrain Business Incubator Centre in Hidd yesterday.
Bafco specialises in the processing, importing and exporting of agricultural products and foodstuffs.
The factory constitutes an encouraging and important start towards more investments in the food sector, as well as the business opportunities generated from it, which will be reflected in economic development, Shaikh Khalid said.
He stressed the importance of the integrated efforts being made to support achieving sustainable food security through effective partnership with the private sector, to ensure that local markets are supplied with basic needs.
The measures are in line with the objectives of the comprehensive development led by His Majesty King Hamad, the priorities and policies of the government headed by His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, and Bahrain Economic Vision 2030, he said.
Shaikh Khalid noted the interest of the private sector in investments that enhance the country’s development, including the establishment of food factories.
He stressed the government’s commitment to implementing policies that enhance levels of food security, diversify and sustain supply chains, upgrade national capabilities in the field of food industries, boost investments and stimulate the private sector to contribute to projects and provide the necessary support.
Touring the new plant, the Deputy Premier commended its integration of cutting-edge technology.
Bahrain Chamber chairman Sameer Nass stressed keenness to support national efforts to bolster food security amid global challenges regarding supply chains.
He stressed the chamber’s support for the new plant and the private sector’s backing to boost food-related projects.
Bafco chairman Khalid Al Amin said the recent mounting global challenges show the importance of protecting supply chains and ensuring the flow of food products.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Parliament Speaker Ahmed Al Musallam, ministers and senior officials.
