The 25-year-old Australian, who is ranked 91st in the world, recovered from an early stumble to beat his Norwegian opponent Victor Durasovic 1-6, 6-1, 6-4 in their dramatic last-16 round match yesterday.
Twenty-nine-year-old entrant Thanasi Kokkinakis, also from Australia, made it through to the quarter-finals after beating Alexandre Muller of France 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 in another neck-and-neck tie.
Jason Kubler completed the Aussies’ joy by reaching the quarter-finals thanks to his well-deserved 6-2, 6-3 win over his Polish opponent Daniel Michalski.
The concluding last-16 tie saw Jordan’s Abedallah Shelbayh shock favourite and world’s 180th Vit Kopriva of the Czech Republic 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 to complete the quarter-final lineup.
In today’s quarter-finals, Popyrin will take on Kokkinakis while Tomas Machac of the Czech Republic will clash with Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff. Lorenzo Giustino of Italy will play compatriot Salvatore Caruso in another last-eight clash.
