FOOTBALL – CHAMPIONS Muharraq suffered their second defeat of the season last night when they went down to Riffa 2-1 in a 19th-round match of the Nasser Bin Hamad Bahrain Premier League.
Wellington Machado put Riffa ahead in the 40th minute as they led 1-0 at half-time.
Hazaa Ali scored in the 59th minute to extend Riffa’s lead and they managed to keep their opponents at bay until the final minutes of the match. However, a last-gasp goal by Hassan Mohammed, in additional time, enabled Muharraq to reduce the margin.
Muharraq’s first defeat of the season was also against Riffa, who held off the eventual champions 2-0 in the eighth round.
Meanwhile, Boukonta Sarr helped East Riffa clinch a 1-0 victory over Al Ahli in another 19th-round match last night. The lone goal of the match was scored in the 50th minute.
An own goal by Ahmed Abdulhamid helped A’ali seal a 2-1 victory over Al Najma in the third match of the night. Mohammed Al Marmour scored for Al Najma in the 58th minute, but A’ali’s Da Silva Robson found the equaliser two minutes later.
On Sunday, Al Khaldiya defeated Bahrain Club 2-1 in their 19th-round match. In other matches played on Sunday, Sitra edged past Malkiya 1-0 while Al Shabab and Manama played out a 1-1 draw.
