An American designer has paid homage to the iconic Teletubbies TV show with a bizarre fashion collection that includes a $2,500 boot inspired by Dipsy, the programme’s green character.
Christian Cowan, a designer with celebrity clients like Lady Gaga and Beyonce, released his exclusive capsule collection that pays homage to the British children’s series from 1997.
“We were throwing around lots of pop culture icons, and then it struck us, let’s do THE icons,” he explained. “We treated Dipsy, Laa-Laa, Po & Tinkey-Winkey like the legends they are”.
The other items from the collection include a denim jacket emblazoned with Po, the red Teletubbie retails for $595. A hoodie featuring Laa-Laa, the yellow Teletubbie sells for $395, while the purple Tinky-Winky appears on a $195 T-shirt. Dipsy is the only Teletubbie to appear twice on the collection, also appearing on a pair of wide-leg jeans retailing for $495.
During its original run from 1997 to 2001, Teletubbies was a global success for the BBC. The show has also raked in over $1 billion in merchandise sales.
The show was rebooted for UK and US audiences in 2015.
