FOOTBALL – ASIAN Football Confederation (AFC) president and Fifa senior vice-president Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa of Bahrain attended the 74th Fifa Congress yesterday, held in Bangkok, Thailand.
During the gathering, which was chaired by Fifa president Gianni Infantino, the Fifa Council unanimously approved the international match calendar for women’s football for 2026 to 2029.
The Fifa Council also proposed to hold the first edition of the Fifa Women’s Club World Cup in January and February of 2026, with the participation of 16 teams and with the tournament being held every four years.
The council proposed organising an additional women’s club competition under the umbrella of Fifa, starting from 2027, in the years in non-Fifa Women’s Club World Cup years.
Qatar was also granted the hosting rights of the Fifa Arab Cup for 2025, 2029, and 2033. The competition will follow the principle of an invitational not included in the international match calendar.
Furthermore, the Fifa Council formally appointed Mattias Grafström as Fifa secretary general following his nomination on an ad interim basis in October of 2023.
