A pet chicken from British Columbia pecked its way into the Guinness World Records, earning the title of the most tricks performed by a chicken in one minute.
Emily Carrington, a veterinarian from Gabriola Island, bought five Hy-Line chickens last year to produce eggs. However, she soon decided to train them, and surprisingly, the hens were able to identify magnetic numbers and letters.
"Their job was to only peck the number or letter that I taught them to peck and ignore the other ones. Even if I add a whole bunch of other letters that aren't the letter they are supposed to peck, they will just peck the letter that I trained them to peck," Carrington told the Nanaimo New Bulletin.
Consequently, Carrington decided to enrol all of her chickens for the Guinness World Record, since all could differentiate letters, numbers, and colours.
However, one of the chickens, Lacy, remarkably protruded its way into victory.
She could identify 6 different letters, numbers and colours correctly in just one minute.
Additionally, this unique achievement resulted in the Guinness World Records opening up a new classification for Lacy: ‘the most identifications by a chicken in one minute.’
Carrington was pleased with the fact that the category emphasizes Lacy’s intelligence. She added, "the chicken is a very underestimated animal and I think if you could stop to think the chicken is a smart animal ... you could maybe look at other animals and think 'Maybe they're smarter than I thought'."
Carrington records and shares her training sessions with her adored chickens on her YouTube channel - ‘The Thinking Chicken.’
