ATHLETICS – BAHRAIN Road Runners (BRR) marked its golden jubilee with a special event held over the weekend, attended by BRR committee president Shaikh Abdulla bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa.
The occasion commemorated 50 years of dedication to sports and community service since the BRR’s founding in 1975.
Athletes, supporters, volunteers, and representatives from the kingdom’s sports community gathered to honour the committee’s five-decade journey of passion, perseverance, and progress.
Also on hand were officials, partners, long-time supporters, and runners of all ages.
“Since 1975, we have carried a clear message: to promote the culture of running, foster public health, and instil values of discipline, perseverance, and teamwork,” said Shaikh Abdulla. “Fifty years have passed – and today, we begin the next 50 with the strength of runners, the belief in collective action, and a renewed vision for a brighter future for running in our beloved kingdom.”
Speaking on behalf of the honourees, Bashar Kazerooni echoed the sentiment of gratitude and unity. “This recognition isn’t the end of a journey – it’s a call to continue,” he said.
“True success is not the work of one person, but the product of a team united by purpose and driven by a shared heartbeat.
“We move forward – strong, confident, and committed to reaching even greater milestones.”
A documentary film was screened during the event, chronicling the BRR committee’s most significant milestones, iconic moments, and the lasting community impact, particularly in empowering people of determination, and advancing health, environmental, and charitable initiatives.
An awards ceremony followed, led by the committee’s honorary president.
Meanwhile, in a gesture reflecting the BRR committee’s humanitarian spirit, it was announced that proceeds from recent races would be donated to local organisations, including Alia Centre, the Cancer Society, the Friendship Society for the Blind, the Down Syndrome Society, the Bahrain Society for Sickle Cell Patients, and the Motivators Association.
