CYCLING – BAHRAIN Victorious Development Team rider Seth Dunwoody claimed a fantastic victory yesterday in the fourth stage of the 48th Giro d’Italia Next Gen road race.
Dunwoody outsprinted eight other competitors in a bunch sprint to the finish of the 134-kilometre leg, winning in a time of two hours 49 minutes and 19 seconds.
“I knew when the route was released a couple of weeks ago, I said to the team that this stage was mine, and I had this stage in my head for a long time in the sense that I could take it in one of two ways – either I could go up the road early, or I could try to survive for a bunch sprint,” Dunwoody said after his triumph.
“Today, the team backed me and everyone believed in me. That gave me more confidence to try and stay in the front, and I couldn’t have asked for more.”
Teammate Alessandro Borgo was not far behind yesterday in 14th place, nearly a minute behind, while Kasper Boremans came 73rd, Jakob Omrzel was 70th, and Bryan Olivo was 102nd.
Despite his victory, Dunwoody remained third in the race’s points classification, while Omrzel stayed fourth in the best young rider standings.
Held over eight stages, this year’s Giro d’Italia Next Gen continues today with the fifth leg, covering 153km. The event, also known as ‘Baby Giro’, is an amateur road race that is one of the most important and formative events on the under-23 international cycling calendar.
