BILLIARDS – Bahrain's Haider Maroom bagged a bronze medal as he narrowly missed out on a place in the final last night in the Saudi Junior Championship 2025, currently being held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
The $20,000 competition is taking place on the sidelines of the ongoing World Pool Championship 2025, and it began with a field of 16 entrants from around the world.
Maroom had an early lead in his semi-final yesterday against Germany’s Pius Baier, but his opponent fought back and eventually clinched a 4-7 victory. Maroon had earlier secured his place in the last four after narrowly defeating Ziad Alqabani of Saudi Arabia 7-6 in the quarters.
Maroom joined Hermeneanu Evan of Romania as losing semi-finalists. Evan bowed 0-7 to Albert Januarta of Poland, who set up a title clash with Baier today.
Maroom put in an impressive performance in his participation in Jeddah. With his finish in the top four, Maroom took home $1,500 in prize money.
Meanwhile, his brother Hussain Maroom came up agonisingly short from securing a place in the knockout stages of this year’s World Pool Championship.
Hussain narrowly lost 8-9 against Mauricio Garcia of Peru in their second losers’ qualification bracket match in the competition’s first stage. Hussain was the underdog against Garcia, who is a World Pool Association wildcard entrant, but he pushed his rival to the edge.
Hussain was the only Bahraini competing in the prestigious $1million tournament, which is the flagship event of the World Nineball Tour. He competed amongst the world’s best in the game for the second successive year.
