French Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau has ordered the deportation of a 47-year-old Moroccan migrant, Hamdi H., after a viral video showed him lighting a cigarette from the eternal flame at a World War I memorial.
The incident, which sparked outrage in France, led to Hamdi's arrest. He faces charges of desecrating a burial site or monument, which could result in a fine of €15,000 or up to one year in prison.
Hamdi, who has 21 prior convictions, including theft and vandalism, had a residency permit set to expire in October.
Retailleau condemned the act, saying, “This disrespectful and pathetic act insults the memory of those who died for France.”
