VOLLEYBALL – BAHRAIN’S under-18 men’s volleyball national team made a winning start last night to their medal bid in the 17th Arab Junior Volleyball Championship, currently being played in Amman, Jordan.
The Bahrainis, coached by Santiago Faidutti from Argentina, outclassed their counterparts from Kuwait in four sets.
The two teams split the opening two frames but Bahrain regained control in the third. They then closed it out in the fourth set to secure their victory with a 3-1 (25-14, 16-25, 25-18, 25-16) final score.
Bahrain and Kuwait are in Group B of the competition’s preliminary round alongside Palestine and Iraq. Group A is composed of Lebanon, Libya, Egypt, and hosts Jordan.
Saudi Arabia and the UAE were also originally slated to take part, but have withdrawn.
The nationals are back in action today when they face off with their Iraqi counterparts at 5pm. They are then set to wrap up the group stage on Wednesday against Palestine, also at 5pm. Both times are Bahrain.
The championship has been organised and is being run by the Arab Volleyball Association, chaired by Bahrain Volleyball Association (BVA) president Shaikh Ali bin Mohammed Al Khalifa, in cooperation with the Jordan Volleyball Federation.
The kingdom’s delegation in Amman is headed by BVA vice-president Mohammed Al Thawadi.
