ATHLETICS – Bahrainis Salwa Eid Naser and Birhanu Balew had sub-par performances last night in Athletissima Lausanne in Switzerland.
The meeting was part of this year’s Wanda Diamond League, the premier one-day meeting series under World Athletics, track and field’s international governing body.
Naser finished fifth in the women’s 400 metres while Balew came 13th in the men’s 5,000m.
Naser had a time of 51.08 seconds in her race, which was won by Henriette Jaeger of Norway in 50.09 seconds. Lieke Klaver of the Netherlands was the runner-up in 50.17s, while Isabell Whittaker of the US was third in 50.63s. Compatriot Alexis Holmes was fourth in 50.73s, crossing the finish line just ahead of Naser.
Completing the final classification were Natalia Bukowiecka (51.19s) of Poland, Britton Wilson (51.69s) of the US, and Sada Williams (53.05s) from Barbados.
In the men’s 5,000m, Balew clocked a mark of 13 minutes 17.75 seconds.
Isaac Kimeli of Belgium triumphed in 13:07.67, while Grant Fisher of the US came second in 13:08.51. Eduardo Herrera of Mexico was third in 13:09.50.
A total of 21 runners took to the track for the race, with two pacemakers.
Athletissima Lausanne was the season’s penultimate event prior to Weltklasse Zurich, scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday next week as the Wanda Diamond League’s two-day final.
