Punch, the abandoned monkey from a Japanese zoo who has gone viral over the past week, has now become a target for scalpers after his IKEA plush toy began reselling for hundreds of dollars on eBay.
Punch went viral after videos of the baby macaque being bullied by other monkeys were shared on social media. It later emerged that Punch's mother had abandoned him when he was an infant; as a result, he was given an IKEA soft toy as a substitute companion. Punch is now rarely seen without the plushie.
As the story went viral, the specific plush toy sold out across all IKEA online stores. It has since been revealed that the toy, listed as ‘Djungelskog’ on the IKEA website for $19.99 (approximately BD7.5), is being listed on eBay for significantly inflated prices.
According to reports, several eBay listings show the plush toy for sale at prices ranging from $100 to $384. Records of completed transactions also show that multiple units have already been sold for around the $100 mark.
