Gergaoun festivities organised by the Youth Affairs Ministry are set to begin next week, bringing traditional celebrations to communities across all four governorates.
The event will commence on March 3 with a special one‑day bus tour that will start in Muharraq, continue through the Capital and Northern governorates, and conclude in the Southern region.
Children will enjoy a variety of entertainment, including appearances by mascots and popular cartoon characters. The programme will also feature face‑painting activities and the distribution of special gifts, adding to the festive atmosphere.
Gergaoun is celebrated annually on the 14th night of Ramadan throughout the Gulf countries. This deeply rooted tradition has endured for hundreds of years, offering a festive way to reward children for their fasting and participation during the holy month.
Children sing traditional melodies as they go from door to door, collecting candies and treats in beautifully decorated bags.
The sweets are known as Gergaoun in Bahrain, and under other names throughout the Gulf such as Karkee’aan in Saudi Arabia, Gargee’aan in Kuwait and Hag Al Leylah in the UAE.
Girls wear colourful, embroidered jalabiyas and gold jewellery, while boys are adorned in traditional Bahraini thobes, jackets and caps.
