Kuwait – The Public Prosecution in Beirut has recommended the rejection of a Kuwaiti demand to extradite a Lebanese who is suspected of involvement in the death of a Filipina maid.
It considered that Nader Assaf should stand trial under the national legal jurisdiction as he is a Lebanese citizen.
Syrian authorities surrendered Nader Essam Assaf to Beirut three weeks because of his Lebanese citizenship but his Syrian wife Mona remains in custody in Damascus.
The couple are accused of causing the death of their maid Joanna Demafelis who was found dead in a freezer in Kuwait on February 6, sixteen months after the duo fled the country on the 7th of November 2016 for fear of being arrested.
The Lebanese Public Prosecutor attached his legal opinion and referred the file to the Minister of Justice Salim Jreissati for a final decision.
Kuwait authorities earlier announced that they had submitted a demand to the Lebanese authorities through the Interpol to extradite the Nader and his Syrian wife.
