BANI Jamra has been recognised as the best-kept village in Bahrain’s Northern Governorate.
It picked up the Beautiful Village Award yesterday, after seeing off competition from Malkiya, Markh and Shahrakan.
The initiative was launched in 2016 by the Northern Municipality in co-ordination with the Northern Municipal Council.
It encouraged people to spruce up their neighbourhoods, with equipment and materials for clean-ups, painting and tree planting distributed for free to participating groups.
More than 140 murals celebrating art and culture, some featuring verses from the Quran, were completed in Bani Jamra.
This is in addition to clean-up campaigns and the rebuilding and repainting of village pavements.
Initiative
“(We are) supportive of any community initiative aimed at preserving national gains and promoting a culture of joint action,” said Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Ministry Municipal Affairs Under-Secretary Dr Nabeel Abu Al Fateh, under whose patronage the award ceremony took place.
He presented a cheque for BD2,000 to the Bani Jamra Charity Society during yesterday’s event at the Bani Jamra Club, while honouring participants from all villages.
Bani Jamra was chosen as the winner by a special panel set up to assess each village.
“(The initiative) depends on strengthening the concept of community partnership through improving environmental reality and employing youthful energies of the villages,” said Northern Municipality director general Yousif Al Ghatam.
“Since a requirement of this competition is continuity of work, we look forward to several initiatives from the people of these villages.”
