BAHRAIN claimed their second successive three-set sweep last night in the AVC Western Zone Qualification Tournament for the Asian Men’s U23 Volleyball Championship, being played at Shaikh Isa Sports City in Riffa.
After powering past Kuwait on opening night Saturday, the Bahrainis yesterday ousted their counterparts from Palestine 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-10).
It was a comfortable victory for the Yusuf Khalifa-coached hosts, who once again received contributions from across their roster which included skipper Mahmood Alhussain Mohammed, Sayed Al Abbar, Jawher Fares, Saif Yusuf Saif, Mohammed Abdulla, Mohammed Haroona, Hassan Haider, Jasim Matrook, Hussain Thamer, Hasan Abdulla, Sayed Jaffer and libero Husain Sultan.
With the result, Bahrain joins Qatar as the only two remaining unbeaten teams in the competition.
The Qataris defeated their rivals from Saudi Arabia 3-0 (25-17, 25-22, 25-22) in yesterday’s second match.
Earlier in the day, Iraq registered their first win after beating Kuwait 3-2 (17-25, 25-21, 23-25, 25-22, 15-13).
Another three matches are scheduled to be held today at the same venue. At 2pm, Palestine and Kuwait face off, followed at 4.30pm by Iraq taking on Qatar. At 7pm, Bahrain play Saudi as they will be hoping to claim their third straight win, which would virtually book their tickets to the Asian under-23 tournament.
The Bahrainis are looking to qualify for the main competition for the first time in its history.
The qualifiers have been organised in cooperation between the Bahrain Volleyball Association and the Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC).
They are being played in round-robin format. Action will continue until Thursday later this week, with tomorrow being a rest day.
