The Kuwaiti government's decision to revoke the citizenship of 157 individuals faced backlash after it was revealed that a former national football player was included in the list.
Muayad Al Haddad, who represented the Kuwaiti national team during the 1982 World Cup in Spain, had his citizenship revoked under new rules.
The 157 individuals who had their citizenship revoked had originally obtained Kuwaiti nationality under the clause of "providing distinguished services to Kuwait".
Al Haddad was born a Bedoon (stateless person) in Kuwait on March 3, 1960, and was only granted citizenship in 2005 in recognition of his national contributions.
