HIS Majesty’s representative for humanitarian work and youth affairs Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa yesterday presented the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix 2022 podium finishers, the champion, Charles Leclerc of Scuderia Ferrari, the runner up, Carlos Sainz Jr of Scuderia Ferrari, and in third place, Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes-AMG Petronas.
Shaikh Nasser presented awards to the drivers at a formal ceremony that marked the end of the 18th edition of the Bahrain Grand Prix, the first race in the 2022 Formula 1 calendar.
Reflecting on this year’s race, Shaikh Nasser said that it represents a special moment for Bahrain to welcome so many in-person international spectators to Formula 1.
He noted that Team Bahrain’s efforts have underpinned the growth of motorsports in the kingdom, one of many achievements that are part of Bahrain’s comprehensive development, a series of investments and initiatives led by His Majesty King Hamad.
Shaikh Nasser emphasised that HRH Prince Salman’s leadership has made the kingdom a global destination for sporting events.
He highlighted the kingdom’s successful management and organisation of international motorsport races. In this regard, Shaikh Nasser thanked all those involved with organising such a successful race, which witnessed a crowd of 98,000 motorsport enthusiasts in attendance across the four-day event.
Bahrain International Circuit chairman Arif Rahimi, separately, congratulated Leclerc and Ferrari on their victory.
“The interest we have seen from fans from all over the world for our 2022 race has been overwhelming, leading to our highest race day attendance in our history. There can be no doubt that Formula 1 is in a great place, with ever-increasing fan interest in Bahrain, the region and beyond.”
BIC chief executive Shaikh Salman bin Isa Al Khalifa added: “The anticipation and excitement ahead of this race weekend has been like nothing we have seen before. Fans from all corners of the world have flocked to BIC, to witness this wonderful celebration of motorsport.
