NIGHT schools will be reopened for in-person classes in the upcoming academic year, set to begin next month.
“Physical attendance at night learning centres for both men and women will resume in the 2022-2023 school year,” the Education Ministry said in a statement yesterday.
Distributed all around Bahrain’s four governorates, these schools award primary- and intermediate-school-equivalent certificates, along with secondary school equivalents.
“The Labour Ministry has hired 178 teachers to act as night school instructors, including sign language experts for deaf students,” the statement said.
“Sign language will be taught in night schools, and other classes will have a sign language translator to accommodate all learners.”
Education Minister Dr Majid Al Nuaimi said the ministry pays special attention to night learning and has been striving to develop the quality of schools serving the purpose.
Progress
He also highlighted Bahrain’s remarkable progress in eradicating illiteracy and promoting adult education, calling it a national responsibility.
“Adult education aims to elevate citizens culturally, socially and vocationally and increase their job prospects,” Dr Al Nuaimi said.
Bahrain’s illiteracy eradication campaign was launched in 1973, and according to latest statistics available in 2020, only two per cent of the population are unable to read or write.
According to the Education Ministry, the figure is one of the lowest worldwide.
Earlier this month, the ministry issued a decision to make in-person attendance mandatory for all students across the country.
This includes pupils in kindergarten, schools and universities as well as public and private educational institutions.
Eight night learning centres will be open in September, for pre-secondary school education. They are: Abu Bakr Al Siddiq Primary Boys’ School, Wadi Al-Sail Intermediate Boys’ School, Busaiteen Primary Girls’ School, Al Alaa Al Hadrami Primary Boys’ School and East Riffa Intermediate Girls’ School.
Those open for secondary school education are Shaikh Isa Bin Ali Secondary Boys’ School, Umm-Salama Secondary Girls’ School and West Riffa Secondary Girls’ School.
