Transportation and Telecommunications Ministry has contracted Indra Sistemas, a Spanish information technology and defence systems company, to enhance the surveillance systems at Bahrain International Airport (BIA).
The ministry said Indra will provide a state-of-the-art automatic dependent surveillance – broadcast (ADS-B) system in the interest of safety and efficiency of air traffic services provided in Bahrain.
The agreement was signed by Transportation and Telecommunications Minister Mohamed Al Kaabi with a representative of the Spanish company.
The new system will provide highly accurate aircraft positional information to the air traffic controllers in accordance with International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) standards and recommended practices.
The ADS-B system will increase airspace capacity, reduce fuel consumption and further develop safety efficiency of Bahrain Flight Information Region (FIR), in addition to other improvements to air navigation services.
“We are proud to announce that Bahrain Civil Aviation Affairs will complement the existing surveillance coverage at BIA with the latest technologies and systems,” said Mr Al Kaabi, adding that, “this will contribute to the overall development of the air navigation services in the kingdom in line with ICAO regional and global air navigation plans to meet existing and future demands in the air navigation field.”
