The National Unity Gathering (NUG) has expressed its denunciation of the approval granted by the competent authorities to screen Barbie movie in Bahrain cinemas.
Calling it the most dangerous and worst film produced by destructive forces in the West, the NUG said the movie provides everything that contradicts moral values as well as religious and Islamic beliefs.
NUG called on all national societies and civil society organisations to join hands and demand that the film be banned in Bahrain.
MP Mohammed Al Maarafi stressed the “need to take all measures to hold accountable those responsible for authorising the screening of such improper films”. Thirty-four MPs have separately signed a request to the Cabinet, seeking to ban on the movie.
One of the biggest blockbusters of the summer, Barbie, which has already made more than $1 billion at the box office, will be released in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia today, the film’s distribution company said earlier, as reported by the GDN.
Lebanon’s Culture Minister Mohammad Mortada earlier yesterday moved to ban the film from being screened in the country, saying it ‘promoted homosexuality’ and contradicted values related to faith and morality. Media reports also talked of calls to ban the movie in Saudi Arabia.
