THE 2023 Korea Movie Nights, part of the Korean Film Festival supported by the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Bahrain, opened at a cinema this week with a heart-warming offering called Life is Beautiful.
The festival, known for its commitment to highlighting both Korean cinema and culture, enthralled its diverse opening night audience, much to the delight of Ambassador Koo Heonsang.
Attendees on Wednesday evening enjoyed free film screenings, snack discounts and an exciting lucky draw.
The Korean Ambassador emphasised the power of cinema as an ideal way to introduce Korean culture as it highlights the respect for family, society and enduring humour often found in the country’s entertainment offerings.
The festival continued with Wonderful Nightmare last night and tonight audiences can enjoy Confidential Assignment 2: International, with the screening starting at 7pm.
Filmgoers are welcome to join in the fun from 6pm.
Tickets are available on a first-come, first-served basis at Theatre 13, Cineplex 1, in Cineco Seef, Seef Mall.
Life is Beautiful (2022) opened the festival, a touching musical romance starring Yum Jung-ah and Ryu Seung-ryong. The movie followed the life-changing journey faced by Oh Se-yeon, portrayed by Yum Jung-ah, a housewife facing a cancer diagnosis, who set out on a trek to reunite with her high school friend.
The film masterfully weaved past and present by offering glimpses of the main character’s childhood. It portrayed the transformation and resilience of its characters, highlighting the essence of the human spirit.
Life is Beautiful evoked a range of emotions, from the sadness of terminal illness to a couple’s light-hearted banter. Yum Jung-ah and Ryu Seung-ryong’s chemistry added authenticity to their roles. Described as ‘a road film with music that fits their stories from childhood to the present’, it was the first ‘jukebox musical’ in South Korea, containing familiar popular songs from the 1970s to the 2000s.
This musical journey also offered insights into Korean culture and history.
Ultimately, it was a beautiful reminder that life, even with its challenges, is worth celebrating.
