The American Mission Hospital held a Gala Dinner at The Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel and Spa to honour the organisations and players for the part they played in the success of this year’s thrilling Island Classic golf tournament.
The prestigious social occasion formed the concluding part of the popular charity annual event held under the patronage of His Majesty King Hamad.
Corporate chief executive Dr George Cheriyan presented trophies and mementoes to tournament supporters, including hole sponsor GDN Media, and took the opportunity to update the guests on hospital developments, including the opening of the award-winning King Hamad American Mission Hospital in A’ali.
As reported in the GDN, the futuristic facility received the ‘best designed hospital project’ accolade at last week’s 13th annual MEED Projects Awards held in the UAE.
During the evening, golfers of the winning teams stepped up on stage to receive their trophies and gifts, and sponsors received mementoes to ‘thank them for their kind sponsorship’.
Several dignitaries, including diplomats and high profile business leaders and corporate executives, attended the event on Sunday.
“It was with pleasure that we welcomed our esteemed guests,” said Julia Tovey, AMH Group chief executive. “We wanted to recognise the sponsors who play an important role in making this event possible. Tonight was their night.”
The AMH Island Classic is an exclusive golf tournament staged at His Majesty King Hamad’s private golf course in Saffriya.
It is the major fundraiser for the hospital’s charitable endeavours since its inception in 1997 and this year has been no different with an estimated BD61,000 raised, around 50 per cent in kind and the rest as a financial boost for community projects.
It has also become a much-awaited and coveted event on the sporting calendar of Bahrain. The tournament, played under the Texas scramble format, has two flights – Championship and Premiership – that allows various skill levels of golfers to participate.
The course has seen some tremendous action and exciting moments over the three days each year. RGC2 stormed to victory in this year’s Championship Flight and Saffriya won the Premier Flight.
The American Mission Hospital also runs a series of much-appreciated community outreach programmes.
The aim has been to continue the work of the pioneers who came on to the shores of the island in 1889 with an aim to serve and provide medical care to all those who needed it.
Since its inception, the hospital has conducted a vast and varied variety of programmes including health checks at social centres, vision and hearing treatment for children with special needs and dental treatment for the blind.
Many of the community outreach programmes are held in co-ordination with the Social Development Ministry. Combined efforts have seen the introduction of several initiatives aimed at the less fortunate of our society and the response by those attending has been ‘overwhelmingly successful and encouraging’, the hospital added.
