Are you looking for a unique and captivating experience in Bahrain? Look no further than Bab Al Bahrain and the adjacent Manama Suq. Situated at the entrance to the Manama Suq in Bahrain’s capital city, Manama, Bab Al Bahrain is a cultural landmark that holds a rich history and offers a glimpse into the country’s past.
Built in 1949, Bab Al Bahrain was originally home to the government’s administrative offices and provided a picturesque view of the sea. Over the years, it has undergone significant transformations, but thanks to the efforts of the Ministry of Culture, it has been restored to its former glory.
Today, it serves as the headquarters for the tourism sector and houses a visitor’s centre, making it an ideal starting point for exploring the area. Our little girl was fascinated by the entrance’s coin structure that was dangling from the ceiling as it gently swayed in the breeze … and it made for a lovely photo!
Behind the historic Bab Al Bahrain gate lies the old Manama Suq, a bustling marketplace that will transport you back in time. Here, you’ll find a vibrant collection of shops offering a wide range of goods. From traditional textiles, spices, incense, and perfumes to handicrafts and souvenirs, the suq showcases Bahrain’s rich cultural heritage. Additionally, you’ll discover modern products from all over the world, providing a delightful blend of traditional and contemporary offerings.
Stepping into the Manama Suq is like entering a time capsule, where the style of commerce from days long past comes to life.
As you stroll through its narrow alleys, you’ll be greeted by friendly shopkeepers eager to share their stories and showcase their unique merchandise.
The suq’s authentic atmosphere and diverse offerings make it a continuing ‘must-visit’ destination for tourists and locals alike.
