Proposal to deprive domestic workers of indemnity for leaving workplace in breach of contract approved
There needs to be a complete overhaul of the domestic workers legislation. Proper employment contracts – validated by embassies and the Labour Market Regulatory Authority for a start, no keeping of their passports, treating them well and paying them a decent living wage, then maybe we won’t have so many runaways. (Also not making them live in shoeboxes would also help).
@justba66a
While you are at it with these legislations can there be a unit that makes sure that the housekeepers are being paid a liveable wage, being paid on time, work within reasonable hours, have a decent space to sleep in, are not being abused and can keep their own passports? Also, set up a hotline where they can call in cases of emergencies or to lodge complaints of abuse. The monitoring unit should make unannounced visits to check on the living and working conditions of these humans who are doing this kind of job. This is a good start to this conversation instead of making them the subject of more punishment.
@dewaynebowen
The system of domestic workers in the country needs an overhaul. There are no laws that truly protect them from their ‘sponsors’, many of whom are either emotionally, mentally, or physically abusive. It’s just another form of modern slavery that we, as a society, have enabled.
@aliiqq
This is a good move, provided they also increase the severity on investigations and punishment of abuse or mistreatment of domestic workers.

Not going to happen.

A person can dream.

The economy is built upon exploitation.
@ashrafaddan
I wouldn’t blame the entire economy. You’ll find bad faith actors even in the biggest economies that are considered so-called ‘First World Countries’. Greed and cruelty are an inevitable part of human nature, but we’re still far better than a lot of other countries in the world.
@ameersmeer
For sure, even within the Gulf, Bahrain is probably the least racist and accepting of all kinds of people.
@ashrafaddan
Domestic workers are abused, underpaid/unpaid. If they leave their workplaces, it is to escape absolutely horrendous work environments. Enforce laws that protect them, not subject them even further to modern-day slavery.
