National Assembly and Parliament Speaker Ahmed Al Musallam has pledged all support to a family affected by a tragic house fire in Sitra on Friday.
Two elderly people were killed in the blaze.
The Speaker accompanied by area MP Jalila Al Sayed visited the house and met grieving family members yesterday.
Mr Al Musallam said he was personally leading parliamentary efforts to help the family members.
The house which suffered a partial fire was home to four families, with a reported total of 17 members, including the deceased grandparents, all living in a 150sqm space.
The GDN reported that neighbours had smashed their way through the windows ‘with their bare hands’ to get to the people trapped inside the burning building.
Locals were able to rescue most of the residents and others were able to jump to safety to neighbouring rooftops, including children and a pregnant woman. They reportedly suffered injuries and fractures in the process.
However, the elderly couple could not be rescued in time. They were overcome by fumes and could not be located through the thick smoke, although the emergency services later carried them out.
Ms Al Sayed yesterday vowed to follow up with all relevant authorities to provide the necessary assistance to the family.
His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, ordered the allocation of a housing unit for the family on Sunday.
