BADMINTON – THE action continued to intensify yesterday in the Bahrain Para Badminton International 2024, currently being played at Isa Sports City in Riffa.
Matches in the various categories of the standing (ST) and wheel chair (WH) brackets reached their quarter-final stage.
Abbas Al Taha of Iraq and Sukru Gul of Turkey overcame a tough challenge from Rosa De Marco of Italy and Oksana Kozyna of Ukraine 22-20, 22-13 in the men’s doubles SU5 and women’s doubles SL3-SU class. In the same group, Indians Karan Paneer and Dev Rathi beat compatriots Neeraj and Arati Janoba Patil 21-5, 21-7.
Also winners in the same category were Deep Ranjan Bisoyee and Manoj Sarkar, along with Jagadesh Dilli and Subhrajeet Maharana, with both pairings from India. Bisoyee and Sarkar defeated Turks Burak May and Sedat Tumkaya, while Dilli and Maharana beat fellow-Indians Umesh Vikram Kumar and Pranay Seth 21-14, 21-11.
In singles play, India’s Tarun Tarun beat 21-13, 21-9 in the men’s SL4 category. Naveen Sivakumar of India followed suit with a hard-earned 21-18, 17-21, 21-16 triumph over countryman Bisoyee, while Sukant Kadam defeated Seth 21-16, 21-8.
Completing the quarter-final men’s singles SL4 winners was Fredy Setiawan of Indonesia, who defeated Guillaume Gailly of France 21-6, 21-6.
Meanwhile, in the doubles WH1-WH2 quarter-finals, Italy’s Yuri Ferrigno and Switzerland’s Luca Olgiati beat the Swiss pair of Cynthia Mathez and Ilaria Renggli 21-4, 21-9. Joining them as winners were the Iraqi tandem of Mohammed Kareem Alameer and Mohammed Jawad Alamshani, who beat Saudi Arabia’s Essam Buayti and Czech partner Zbynek Sykora 21-8, 21-9.
In singles, Ferrigno won against Kamil Snajdar of the Czech Republic 21-9, 21-6, David Toupe of France beat Lukas Kyncl of the Czech Republic 21-8, 21-6, Muhammad Ikhwan Ramli defeated Martyn Ford of Australia 21-12, 21-8, and Alamshani overcame Sykora 21-16, 21-10.
Action continues today in the tournament, which is being held for the third time in the kingdom. It has been organised and is being run by the Bahrain Paralympic Committee (BPC) in co-operation with the Bahrain Badminton and Squash Federation (BBSF) and Badminton World Federation (BWF).
