CYCLING – TEAM Bahrain Victorious rider Antonio Tiberi narrowly missed out on the podium yesterday on the 20th and penultimate stage of the 2024 Giro d’Italia.
The Italian star, who holds the Maglia Bianca or “white jersey” as the race’s best young rider, was classified fourth in yesterday’s 184-kilometre leg.
Teammates and countrymen Damiano Caruso and Edoardo Zambanini also had fine performances, taking 11th and 23rd places, respectively.
With his strong ride yesterday, Tiberi heads into the race’s finale today with a minute and 42-second lead over Thymen Arensman of INEOS Grenadiers in the Maglia Bianca rankings.
Tiberi also stayed fifth overall on the general classification (GC) for the Maglia Rosa or leader’s “pink jersey”. He still has to make up a two-minute gap from third, currently being held by Arensman’s teammate Geraint Thomas. Caruso rose two places to 17th yesterday as he joins Tiberi in the GC’s top 20, while Zambanini follows in 27th.
This year’s Giro d’Italia concludes today with the 21st and final stage in Rome, covering 125km of the overall 3,317.5km total.
The race is the first Grand Tour event of the 2024 Union Cycliste Internationale World Tour calendar. The others are the Tour de France, taking place in June and July, and the Vuelta a Espana, scheduled for August and September.
