FOOTBALL – BAHRAIN have dropped five places on the latest edition of the Fifa Women’s World Ranking, released by international football’s governing body.
The kingdom’s senior women’s national team are now in 91st overall on the global classification with 1,226.16 ranking points. They were deducted 27.96 points after previously being in 86th position. Their decline can be attributed to four successive defeats in friendly matches played at home over the past couple of weeks. They first lost twice to Palestine 0-1 and then 1-2, and then fell to Indonesia in two other games, 2-3 and then 0-3. Amongst teams in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), the Bahrainis are ranked 16th. Japan are top in the continent and seventh in the world with 1,975.97 points. They are followed in the AFC by North Korea (1,943.66) as 10th globally and Australia (1,889.99) in 12th. The nationals are also second amongst Arab teams, behind only Jordan, who are 74th with 1,331.17 ranking points.
Spain are number one in the world with 2,099.89 ranking points, followed by France (2,029.52), England (2,023.47), Germany (2,018.49), and the US (2,015.95).
Bahrain’s new ranking is their lowest since 2007, when they were 110th in the world. Their best-ever classification was in 2010 when they were 64th. In most recent years, the women’s national team’s best rank was 84th in 2023, 2022 and 2020, while they placed 85th in 2021.
Bahrain’s recent friendlies were part of the women’s team’s preparations for this year’s Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games, set to take place this November in Bangkok, Thailand, where the kingdom’s women’s futsal team will be participating. Many of the players on the women’s football team also suit up for the futsal squad.
