TRIATHLON – BAHRAIN Victorious 13 athletes Katrina Matthews and Joe Skipper had impressive results in a pair of international triathlons held in Europe.
Matthews struck gold at the Ironman Vitoria-Gasteiz in Spain, while Skipper narrowly missed out on the podium in the Ironman 70.3 Swansea in Wales.
Matthews completed her 3.8-kilometre swim, 180-kilometre bike ride, and 42.2-kilometre run in a winning time of eight hours, 24 minutes and 23 seconds.
The Briton produced the second-fastest swim split, rode with the leaders during the cycle leg, and then stamped her mark on the race with the day’s fastest marathon.
Matthews was dominant in the event, breaking the tape more than eight minutes ahead of the rest of the field, while also improving her own personal best by the same margin.
Els Visser of the Netherlands was the runner-up in 8:32:29, while Ruth Astle, also of Britain, joined them on the pro women’s podium in third in 8:38:07.
Meanwhile, racing over the half-distance, Skipper took fourth place amongst the pro men in Swansea.
Skipper finished the 1.9km swim, 90km cycle, and 21.1km half-marathon in 3:57:17 seconds to come just shy of a podium place.
The British triathlete was ranked behind two countrymen on the race’s final classification, including winner Harry Palmer, who had a time of 3:52:54, and bronze-medallist Andrew Horsfall-Turner, who ran a 3:56:13 mark.
Gabriel Sandor of Sweden took the silver medal in 3:55:36.
