CYCLING – Team Bahrain Victorious rider Jakob Omrzel had a fantastic finish yesterday in the 49th Tour of the Alps, climbing the podium in the best young rider rankings after taking a place in the top five in the race’s fifth and final stage.
Omrzel ranked fifth in the event’s concluding 128.6-kilometre leg, which started from the Italian city of Trento and ended in Bolzano.
The Slovenian was at the head of a trailing group that clocked a minute and 10 seconds behind stage and race winner Giulio Pellizzari of Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe, who completed yesterday’s distance in three hours 20 minutes 36 seconds.
With the result, which was his best from the Tour of the Alps’ five stages, Omrzel improved one spot to sixth overall in the race’s general classification.
He was 1:55 from Pellizzari, who also emerged as the event’s best young rider, finishing with a similar time gap from Omrzel in the standings.
“I came to the Tour of the Alps for sure with the reason to get a good result,” Omrzel said after completing the final leg.
“In the end, I managed to be in the top 10.”
“I was climbing every day, day by day getting better, so I’m happy.”
Amongst his Bahrain Victorious teammates, countryman Roman Ermakov finished yesterday’s stage in 62nd, Finn Kasper Borremans was 67th, and Austrian Rainer Kepplinger came 69th.
Dutchman Max van der Meulen and Briton Oliver Stockwell both finished out of the time limit.
This year’s Tour of the Alps covered a total of 762.7km, with riders competing across Austria and Italy.
The elite men’s road race was a part of the 2026 calendar in the Union Cycliste Internationale’s Pro Series.
