VOLLEYBALL – BAHRAIN are set to compete in the second West Asian Men’s U20 Volleyball Championship, taking place from August 16 to 24 in Al Ain, the UAE.
The Bahrainis are one of 10 squads in the regional event, being organised by the West Asian Volleyball Association and the UAE Volleyball Association.
The nationals have been drawn in Group A for the tournament’s preliminary round along with Kuwait, Qatar, Yemen, and Syria; while Group B features Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Palestine, Lebanon, and hosts UAE.
Bahrain are the defending champions of the competition. They won last year’s inaugural edition held in the Saudi city of Jeddah after defeating the hosts 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-22) in the final. With that result, the Bahrainis wrapped up a perfect tournament campaign, where they won all six of their matches, each in straight sets.
Three of the Bahraini players also came away with individual awards. Outside hitter Abbas Ehsan was named the Most Valuable Player, while Hussain Issa came away with the Best Outside Hitter award. Mohammed Hassan Nasser completed the national team’s individual awardees by taking home the Best Libero honour.
Bahrain’s under-20 national team are coached by Tunisian Saber Abdulwahed.
