HANDBALL – Bahrain's youth national handball team are set to take on defending champions South Korea and Iraq in the preliminary round of the 10th Asian Men’s Youth Handball Championship, which will be taking place in Amman, Jordan next month.
A re-draw for the Asian Handball Federation (AHF) under-19 tournament took place after the AHF moved the event’s host venue from Shiraz, Iran, to the Jordanian capital.
The Bahrainis are amongst a field of 13 squads from across the continent set to take part. Action is scheduled from September 3 to 14. The competition is also a qualifying event for the 11th IHF Men’s Youth U19 World Championship, set to be held in Slovenia next year. The top five teams from the competition will secure their spots in the worlds.
Bahrain, South Korea, and Iraq are in Group A. Group B is composed of Japan, India, and hosts Jordan; Group C includes Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the UAE; and Group D features Iran, Kuwait, Chinese Taipei, and China.
The kingdom’s youth national team have been preparing for the event with local training sessions and a number of friendly games held recently.
The top two from each group will move on to the main round, while the other squads will compete for the Martyr Fahad Al Ahmad Al Sabah Cup in the consolation bracket.
That will then set the stage for the semi-finals, scheduled for September 12, and then the gold and bronze medal games will be held on the tournament’s final day.
South Korea have accumulated a total of seven medals in the competition’s nine editions – three gold, one silver, and three bronze medals. Similarly, Qatar and Japan have each secured a total of five medals.
