A new amendment to the UAE labour laws will deter employers and companies from hiring visit visa holders. Employers will fined between AED 100,000 and AED 1 million for hiring workers without a proper work permit, bringing them to the UAE, and failing to provide them with a job.
Earlier, companies could be fined between AED 50,000 and AED 200,000 for hiring workers without a work permit.
According to several reports, companies would often bring workers from abroad on a visit visa promising them a work visa. They would be forced to work for three months without pay and then to return to their own countries, often having to pay a fine for overstaying their visit visas.
The heavier fines indicate the UAE's commitment to protecting workers' rights.
