MEMBERS of the public have been urged to join a beach clean-up drive being organised by a major bank in Bahrain.
The Gulf International Bank (GIB) is hosting the ‘Beauty and the Beach’ campaign on Nurana Island near Karranah on Saturday, from 9am until noon.
The initiative – which is part of the bank’s corporate social responsibility programme, Wagib – is being held in co-operation with the Capital Trustees Board, the Gulf City Cleaning Company and Bahrain Beachcombers.
To raise awareness about environmental pollution, a steel sculpture figure will be displayed on the beach and used to collect the litter.
Local graffiti artists will paint bins that will then stay on the beach to help sustain the change and create a long-term impact on the environment.
Other activities include a giant game of snakes and ladders with questions related to the environment and a sand sculpture artist.
Refreshments will be provided to volunteers.
Children, parents and teachers from the British School of Bahrain, Nadeen International School and St Christopher’s School will be joining in the clean-up.
The BSB will set up an Eco-Stall to educate and promote sustainability and the three Rs of the environment: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.
The school’s environmental ambassadors – the Eco-Rangers – will be involved to promote and share their work.
“GIB’s efforts in organising this co-operative public initiative are commendable,” said Capital Trustees Board chairman Mohammed Al Khozaie.
“GIB is proud to organise this beach clean-up which aims to bring different groups of volunteers together for a good cause while raising awareness for the environment and promote public action to keep Bahrain clean,” said GIB chief executive Abdulaziz Al Helaissi.
Under Wagib, the bank has been involved in a series of charitable initiatives, including the recent Ayadi Al Amal art exhibition with Bahrain Down Syndrome Society, a blood donation drive, tree planting initiative to mark the World Earth Day, among others.
