Local female sports team Top Shots Bahrain Netball Club stepped off the court to pamper some pooches during two recent days of volunteering.
Bahrain’s ‘most sociable netball team’, has demonstrated a commitment to making a positive impact on the community by utilising their time to support non-profit organisation (NPO), Bahrain Rescues.
Bahrain Rescues, made up of a group of animal loving volunteers that rescue and rehome domestic animals, with a particular focus on injured ones that have been dumped and are in need of rehabilitation and shelter before finding a ‘forever home’.
Founded in 2018 by club captain Molly Cramp, Top Shots Bahrain started with just 10 women who shared her love of netball. She explained: “What began as a simple idea has now grown into something far bigger and more beautiful than I ever imagined.
“Today, we are a squad of more than 50 amazing women, each coming from different ages, backgrounds and cultures, united by our passion for the sport and the community we’ve built together.”
Beyond the game, Top Shots has created a safe and supportive space where women can connect, empower and uplift each other.
The club’s dedication to giving back to the community is evident in their partnership with Bahrain Rescues. As Top Shots community secretary Nina Paul emphasises, “Giving back to the community is part of what Top Shots stands for.” By volunteering their time and raising awareness for Bahrain Rescues, the team has played a vital role in supporting the shelter’s mission to provide care and shelter to abandoned and injured animals.
The experience of volunteering at Bahrain Rescues was particularly meaningful for Top Shots lifetime member Vikki Hughes-Swick: “As a dog lover, spending the morning with 20-plus dogs is a perfect start to the day already,” she said.
Ms Hughes-Swick was touched by the joy and gratitude expressed by the dogs and was inspired to consider adopting a furry friend to join her own rescue dog, Rudy.
Bahrain Rescues’ co-founder Mojda Banahi expressed her gratitude for Top Shots’ support and emphasised the importance of community involvement in their work. “As a non-profit organisation, it’s fundamental for us to have people who are active in the community take part in our mission,” she said.
“The reach that comes with each volunteer is vital for us to be able to expand our network and diversify the type of help we receive.”
Donations are always welcome at Bahrain Rescues. It has a constant need of food, blankets and towels, which Top Shots Bahrain generously donated as part of its charitable endeavour. However, there is always a need for more supplies to support the growing number of animals.
Beyond its charitable work, Top Shots Bahrain is also known for their exceptional sportsmanship and camaraderie. The team’s commitment to fair play and their ability to foster a positive and inclusive environment on the court have earned them widespread respect and admiration.
In addition to their netball activities, Top Shots Bahrain organises various social events and community initiatives throughout the year. These gatherings provide opportunities for members to bond, network and celebrate their shared passion for the sport.
