GCC GAMES – BAHRAIN wrapped up their sensational campaign from the third edition of the GCC Beach Games yesterday by winning two more medals to bring their tally to 17.
Bahrain’s beach handball national team bagged the silver medals in their competition while the Bahraini pair of Ahmed Abdulnabi and Ahmed Suhail won bronze in the five-kilometre race of marathon swimming.
The beach handball team finished as runners-up after defeating their counterparts from the UAE 2-0. They took the first period 24-13 and then claimed the next 19-18 to secure their classification as tournament runners-up.
Hosts Oman secured the gold medals while the UAE were also on the podium with bronze.
In yesterday’s marathon swimming event, Abdulnabi and Suhail came away with third place. Oman were triumphant to take gold while Saudi Arabia finished second.
Yesterday’s winnings on the GCC Beach Games’ final day brought Bahrain’s medal tally to 17, including four gold, four silver, and nine bronze medals.
Three of the gold medals were claimed in beach athletics, where the Bahrainis also came away with a silver and three bronze.
The other gold medal was won by the kingdom’s tent pegging national team.
Bahrain’s sailors came away with five medals from their respective fleets, including two silver and three bronze, while Abdulnabi and Suhail took two bronze medals.
The beach volleyball pairing of Ali Marhoon and Hassan Nasser bagged a bronze while the beach handball squad took their silver.
Bahrain’s delegation in the eight-sport meeting finished fourth overall on the final medal table amongst the six participating GCC nations.
The home team were top with 45 medals in all, including 20 gold, 18 silver and seven bronze. The UAE followed with 22 medals, including eight gold, eight silver, and six bronze, while Saudi finished right ahead of Bahrain with 18 medals, including four gold, six silver and eight bronze.
Qatar were fifth with seven medals, including three gold, one silver, and three bronze, and Kuwait were last on eight medals but no gold. They had two silver and six bronze.
The third GCC Beach Games brought together more than 300 athletes from the six GCC nations, competing in 39 events across eight sports. The other sports in the event were paramotor and beach soccer.
The first-ever edition of the GCC Beach Games was organised by Bahrain in 2010. The kingdom’s athletes participated in six sports then, including beach soccer, beach handball, beach volleyball, bodybuilding, sailing, and open water swimming.
The second edition took place in the Qatari capital in 2015. The Bahrainis also competed in six sports, including beach soccer, beach handball, beach volleyball, 3x3 basketball, sailing, and swimming.
