GOLF – The 60th Bahrain Open golf championship is set to be held this weekend at Awali Golf Club (AGC), together with the 36th Bahrain Ladies Open.
The men’s open tournament has been a highlight of golf in Bahrain. In its early years, it was mainly won by expatriate golfers, but since the mid-1970s, the Bahraini players have taken over and are also the favourites this year.
Last year’s winner, national team golfer Ahmed Al Zayed, will look to defend his title against 2023 winner Khalifa Al Merisi and six-time winner Nasser Yaqoob Saleh, amongst others.
In the ladies’ competition, two young Bahrainis Habiba Maher and Fatima Albunni have a shot at the win, which would give a major boost to the game amongst young girls in Bahrain. The title-defender is Sarah Hobday, with both her daughter Suzy and son Sam having won their respective competitions in the past.
AGC will be open today and tomorrow for participants to get in practice rounds ahead of both 36-hole stroke-play tournaments on Friday and Saturday.
Tournament organisers expressed their thanks and appreciation to the event’s sponsors, including Bapco Energies, InterContinental Bahrain for arranging lunch and dinner over the weekend, The Banz Group, Gulf Air for sponsoring a hole-in-one prize, Seef Dental, American Mission Hospital, BFC, Reza Hygiene, and Coca-Cola for supplying the beverages throughout the weekend.
Visitors are welcome to attend the tournament.
