One more person has been reported dead following the fire at a multi-storey building in Al Hejiyat area earlier this morning, taking the toll to two.
A 30-year-old youth with special needs and his 48-year-old mother were killed in the blaze that broke out in a flat on the second floor of a nine-floor residential building, the Interior Ministry said.
The mum fell from the balcony while trying to escape.
Meanwhile, a child who suffered from suffocation following the smoke was transferred to a hospital for treatment and his health condition is stable.
The main operations room received a report on the fire at 2.45am, and civil defence teams reached within 10 minutes and rescued 16 people from the smoke-filled apartment.
A total of 116 tenants were evacuated and the fire was brought under control and cooling operations were carried out.
An investigation has been launched to determine the cause.
