An American tourist visiting the Roman Colosseum was impaled on a fence when he tried to climb it to get a better look at the historic amphitheatre.
The 47-year-old tourist fell onto one of the fence spikes and was left dangling and screaming in pain until he eventually lost consciousness.
Emergency services were dispatched to the scene and managed to rescue the man, though it took 20 minutes to remove him from the spike and required 80 stitches under emergency surgery.
Interestingly, this incident marks the first impalement in the Colosseum in over 1,500 years.
