Muharraq emerged as the champions of the Nasser Bin Hamad Bahrain Premier League after a dominant 6-1 victory over Manama in the 18th round yesterday.
Ellit Simoes and Soufian Mahrouq scored two goals each to guide the champions to a memorable win at the Shaikh Ali Bin Mohammed Al Khalifa Stadium in Arad. Juninho and Husain Abdulkarim were the other scorers for Muharraq. Ahmed Ammar netted the lone goal for Manama, who have been relegated to the second division after finishing at the bottom of the standings. East Riffa were the other team to be relegated.
In the other 18th-round matches played yesterday, East Riffa held off Riffa 1-0 at Khalifa Sports City Stadium while A’ali saw off Al Ahli 2-0 at Bahrain National Stadium.
Muharraq topped the standings with 47 points, followed by Al Khaldiya on 33 points and Riffa on 31. Sitra (28 points) and Al Najma (25) finished among the top five.
Meanwhile, His Majesty King Hamad received a cable of congratulations from Muharraq Club chairman Shaikh Ahmed bin Ali bin Abdulla Al Khalifa on the club’s triumph.
On behalf of all club members, Shaikh Ahmed extended his congratulations to His Majesty, highlighting that the achievement adds to the Muharraq Club’s distinguished record and reflects the support the club receives through the King’s care for sports and athletes in Bahrain.
He also commended the support of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, for sports and athletes, and the backing of His Majesty’s representative for humanitarian work and youth affairs and Supreme Council for Youth and Sport (SCYS) chairman Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa and SCYS first deputy chairman, General Sports Authority chairman and Bahrain Olympic Committee president Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa.
