BASKETBALL – AL Ahli and Muharraq have reached the final of the Zain Bahrain Basketball League after narrow victories in the second matches of their best-of-three semi-final series last night.
Ahli defeated Manama 64-60 and Muharraq edged past Al Najma 83-82 at Khalifa Sport City to book their final berths.
Ahli had claimed an 86-56 win in the opener on Monday while Muharraq held off Najma 123-90.
Manama got off to a promising start yesterday, taking the opening quarter 17-11 and managing to stay ahead by four points at half-time. Ahli regrouped after the setback in the first half and staged a remarkable comeback, claiming the third quarter 22-13 for a five-point lead. They held their ground in the final session to clinch a narrow four-point victory.
Rayvonte Rice, with 26 points, was the top scorer for the winners in yesterday’s game. He was supported by Dominique Sutton with 17 points and Elijah Thomas with 10. Tony Carr was the top scorer for Manama with 24 points.
Muharraq too got off to an underwhelming start against Najma last night. Najma held a one-point lead at half-time after winning the opening session 28-22. They extended their lead by six point in the third quarter, but Muharraq staged a magnificent comeback in the final quarter, which they took 24-17 to eke out a one-point victory.
Tony Mitchell paced Muharraq with 18 points while Mohamed Ameer chipped in with 16 points and Sir’dominic Pointer added 13. Alfonzo Mckinnie was the top scorer for Najma with 19 points, followed by Hussain Mohammed with 15 and Mohamed Hussain with 14.
