SWIMMING – Bahrain’s swimming superstar Amani Alobaidli put in a solid showing yesterday in the women’s 100 metres backstroke at the World Aquatics Championships 2025 in Singapore.
Competing in the second of six first-round heats, 19-year-old Alobaidli finished sixth amongst the race’s 10 swimmers in a time of one minute 06.57 seconds.
The Paris 2024 Olympian had a split of 31.57s en route to completing her event 02.25s behind winner Elizabeth Jimenez of the Dominican Republic, who clocked a mark of 1:04.32.
Saovanee Boonamphai of Thailand was the runner-up in 1:04.87, while Anishta Teeluck of Mauritius came third in 1:05.20. Just ahead of Alobaidli were Taline Mrad of Lebanon in 1:06.21 for fourth and Carolina Cermelli of Panama in 1:06.25 for fifth place.
Overall, Alobaidli finished 46th from the 56 swimmers who participated.
Alobaidli will be back in the pool at the World Aquatics Championships Arena, located at Singapore Sports Hub in the zone of Kallang, for the women’s 50m backstroke tomorrow.
Also amongst Bahrain’s swimmers this week, Asma Le Falher will compete in the women’s 100m freestyle and Saud Ghali will swim in the men’s 200m breaststroke on Thursday, while Ahmed Suhail will race in the men’s 1,500m freestyle on Saturday and in the men’s 400m medley on Sunday.
The kingdom’s national team at this year’s World Aquatics Championships is headed by Bahrain Aquatics official and Rio 2016 Olympian Farhan Saleh Farhan.
Elsewhere yesterday, Bahrain’s Ali Alawi set a new long-course national record in the men’s 400m freestyle. Alawi was competing in the 2025 FG Senior Championship POMP in Florida, in the US.
He clocked a Bahraini best of 4:15.07 to win the meeting’s B final in their discipline. He finished ahead of Felipe Alvarez, who clocked a mark of 4:18.12, while Ethan Persten came third in 4:19.19. Eight swimmers contested the race.
Alawi’s record was confirmed by Bahrain Aquatics, the kingdom’s national governing body for the sport of swimming.
