In just a matter of eight hours, Dubai Police foiled a plot to steal an exceptionally rare and expensive pink diamond worth $25 million (BD9.42m).
Dubbed Operation 'Pink Diamond', police arrested three suspects after they attempted to sneak the gem out of the country, foiling their six-month-long plan.
After a thorough investigation, it was revealed that the perpetrators tricked the diamond's owner into believing that a wealthy buyer was interested in the gemstone. They rented luxury cars and booked meetings in lavish hotels to feign credibility and even hired a renowned diamond expert to verify the stone.
The diamond's owner fell for the trick and was eventually convinced to bring the diamond out of his secure shop and meet the suspects and 'the buyer' in a villa.
As soon as the diamond was shown to them in person, they snatched it and fled.
Dubai Police were very quickly informed of the theft and acted swiftly, forming a special task force within minutes. They identified and located three Asian suspects who went in separate directions after fleeing the scene.
Multiple raids were carried out, and all suspects were arrested. The diamond was eventually found in a refrigerator that was scheduled to be shipped to an Asian country.
The diamond was returned to its owner, who said he was astonished by the speed and efficiency of Dubai Police, who recovered the gem the next morning.
